Corneal Disease Treatment in Las Colinas, TX

Corneal Disease Treatment in Las Colinas, TX

The outermost layer of the eye is known as the cornea. This protective layer is clear; it helps shield the eye from pain and debris, while also promoting clear vision. Unfortunately, the cornea can be damaged by injury and illness. All illnesses that affect the cornea are part of the category known as corneal disease. The majority of corneal diseases are treatable.

Corneal Disease Causes

There are many different types of corneal disease, each with its slightly different symptoms and causes. That said, many forms have similar beginnings. Most forms of corneal disease stem from injury, infection, a symptom of another disease or personal history.

Some of the different types of corneal disease include:

  • Keratitis (cornea inflammation)
  • Corneal shingles
  • Ocular herpes
  • Keratoconus (thinning cornea)
  • Corneal dystrophy
  • Fuchs' dystrophy

The list above represents just a small portion of the many problems that can affect the cornea.

Corneal Disease Symptoms

The exact corneal disease symptoms will vary depending on which disease is present. There are, however, several warning signs that are universal or very frequent among all types of corneal disease. The only way to determine if corneal disease is present is to meet with an eye-health professional.

Common corneal disease symptoms include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Eye pain
  • Watery eyes
  • Tearing
  • Redness
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Reduced clarity

As a corneal disease progresses, more symptoms will emerge. To provide an example, extreme ocular herpes can actually lead to blisters around the cornea, while corneal dystrophy can lead to extreme eye pain.

Corneal Disease Treatment

There is no one best corneal disease treatment. For minor corneal disease, less invasive or non-invasive methods can be used. For major corneal disease, however, corneal transplant surgery is likely the recommended option.

Treatments for minor corneal disease include:

  • Eye drops
  • Eye patches
  • Ointments
  • Prescription eyeglasses
  • Soft contact lenses

For major corneal disease, the only real option is Corneal Transplant Surgery. This treatment option is typically reserved for when non-invasive methods are no longer an option.  During corneal transplant surgery:

  • The damaged cornea is removed using either lasers or micro-incisions. In some cases, the cornea may be only partially removed.
  • A donor cornea is inserted in to the eye. This cornea is attached using tiny stitches.
  • Over time, the donor cornea fuses with the rest of the eye and the stitches are removed.

Cornea transplant surgery is considered to be a very safe procedure. Whlie cornea transplant surgery is thought to be effective at treating most forms of corneal disease, exceptions such as ocular herpes do still exist.
