Hemianopia Treatment in DFW, TX

Hemianopia in DFW, TX

Hemianopia, sometimes spelled hemianopsia, is an eye health condition associated with partial blindness. Those who suffer from hemianopia deal with decreased vision in half of one or both eyes. That means that the eye itself is only half-functional, with the other half being blind. Hemianopia is often associated with stroke and brain aneurysm, although it can occur for other, rarer reasons.

In some cases, hemianopia can be reversed or treated. Request more information about hemianopsia treatment: Call (817) 203-2760 or contact Ms. Jessica Stangenwald online.

Hemianopia Causes

Hemianopia occurs when half of the field of vision is blocked in one or both eyes. This is a type of partial blindness. There are many different reasons that this can occur, including Macular Degeneration . However, most causes of hemianopia can be sourced to a specific medical condition.

Common causes of hemianopia include:

  • Stroke
  • Brain aneurysm
  • Nerve injury
  • Brain damage
  • Brain tumors
  • Severe eye infection
  • Extreme migraines

Hemianopia Symptoms

Hemianopia is defined by a partially blocked field of vision in one or both eyes. There are actually several different types of hemianopia, named to differentiate which part of the eye is blocked. The different types of hemianopia include:

  • Homonymous hemianopia, in which the same side is blocked in both eyes. Someone suffering from this type of hemianopia could be blind in the right half of each eye, for example.
  • Heteronymous hemianopia, in which different sides are blocked in each eye.
  • Superior hemianopia, in which the top half of the eyes is blocked. This can occur in one or both eyes.
  • Inferior hemianopia, in which the bottom half of the eyes is blocked. This can occur in one or both eyes.

A similar condition to hemianopia is quadrantopia. Quadrantopia refers to when a quarter of one or both eyes is blocked, rather than a half.

Hemianopia Treatment

In some cases, hemianopia is treatable. When it's caused suddenly by a stroke, hemianopia may actually go away on its own. In that case, no further treatment is necessary. In cases of chronic hemianopia, there is no easy cure. Instead, treatment focuses on aid devices and expanding the field of vision as much as possible.

Types of hemianopsia treatment include:

  • Eye movement training
  • Visual restoration therapy
  • Underlying condition treatment for tumors, migraines or nerve damage
  • Special prism lenses, typically as a part of eyeglasses. These lenses bend light in order to provide a wider field of view for those with hemianopsia.

Prism lenses are among the most common treatments for hemianopia. While they do not cure the condition, they may help significantly with mobility and quality of life.
